The following is one of my favorite Elvis Presley Fun Facts:
Elvis was considered an average-looking, pimply-faced teenager as many of us were during our adolescent years, and legend has it that not only was he not popular at all in high school, he wasn’t a particularly impressive performer either; at least, not initially!
Elvis was picked on and teased, and actually bullied by classmates while attending first grade at Lawhorn School in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1942. Kids would always tease him as being a “Mama’s boy” and because he had a mild stuttering problem. Elvis Presley was quite shy as a kid, but he was always known as a “good, well-mannered kid” by his teachers.
When Elvis entered high school he took on a different persona than all the other students around him. While all the other boys were sporting crew cuts and wearing plaid shirts, Elvis wore his hair slicked back while wearing “pimped out,” flashy clothes! He was already “coming into his own,” preparing himself for his dreams of playing guitar and singing for a living!
So what happened to this awkward teenager? How did Elvis go from being “just an average guy”into arguably the best-looking male singer of the twentieth century? Probably for the same reason I went from being a pretty darn-good-looking kid (or so they say) to an average-looking adult male. We all change! Although I don’t tell my wife (I hope she doesn’t read this) I know several girls who were “plain Janes” in high school, only to develop and mature into beautiful goddesses!
As far as his performing ability; Elvis performed at his high school’s talent show in 1953 and won first prize after singing “Cold Cold Icy Fingers” to a thunderous applause, and it’s reported that a girl actually fainted!
I guess practice does make perfect!
