In 1972 Elvis Presley was concentrating on singing ballad after ballad.  He was going through a separation with his wife, Priscilla over what he said was the result of his crazy work schedule and because in his words, “You can love someone and be totally wrong for them.”

That sounded like Elvis.  Always On My Mind, a gorgeous song that would later prove to be a huge hit for Willie Nelson, was pitched to Elvis by two songwriters he was very familiar with.  Mark James had written Elvis’ Suspicious Minds and Johnny Christopher had penned one of Elvis’ favorite songs, Mama Liked The Roseswhich reportedly made Elvis shed tears the first time he heard the song.

Elvis Always On My Mind was recorded on March 29, 1962 at RCA Studio C in Hollywood, CA, and Elvis insisted it be released on a single together with the song Separate Ways.  The public perceived  both songs to be directed at Priscilla but while one song begged for forgiveness (Always On My Mind) the other expressed acceptance that it was time to break up and go their separate ways.

Here’s an excerpt:

Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

The songwriters of Elvis’ Always On My Mind handed us a tremendous gift of a song, and Elvis offered us an amazing, emotionally charged recording that will always stand the test of time!
